A hot week, but no records « Malaga Weather Blog

by malagaweather

Temperatures in Malaga have been high during the past week. A high of 36 at the airport on Wednesday was followed by close on 39 during Thursday with 37 recorded on Friday. No records, though; on the 18th July 1978 the temperature exceeded 44! There seems to be a general correlation  between changeable weather in northern Europe and hot days in Malaga. The reason is that the usual heat low that covers Iberia during the peak summer months becomes displaced east occasionally due to the vigour of the progressive Atlantic weather systems. A displacement east of the heat low leads to more persistent land breezes than normal with resulting high temperatures. However, the slightly less stable weather that filters south over Iberia can also lead to lower than average temperatures at times.  This was the case in July 1978 . Maxima were only around 24 on the first 3 days of the month. Sea fog plagued the beaches for a while around mid month, and although the temperature reached 44 on the 18th, maxima on either side of this very hot day were only around 30.
